What Is Majestic Trust Flow?

Trust Flow is a score from 0 to 100 that measures how close a site sits, through links, to a hand picked set of trusted seed sites. Majestic, the UK based link intelligence company behind the MJ12bot crawler, introduced it in 2012 together with Citation Flow; the pair are known as its Flow Metrics. A link from a seed site, or from a site the seeds link to, passes a lot of trust. A link from a site ten hops away from any seed passes almost none.

That makes TF a quality signal rather than a size signal. A small site with a handful of links from respected publications can outscore a big site built on thousands of directory and comment links. It also makes TF hard to fake, which is why link buyers check it before paying for a placement. The full explanation, with examples, is in what is Trust Flow.

One common mix up: Trust Flow is a Majestic metric, not a Moz one. If you searched for a Moz trust flow checker or a Moz TF CF checker, Majestic's TF and CF are the numbers you were after, and this page checks them. Moz's own scores are Domain Authority, Page Authority and Spam Score, which our DA PA checker returns for the same list.

Trust Flow vs Citation Flow: Reading TF and CF Together

Citation Flow is the other half of the pair. It measures how much link influence a site has, counting links without asking where they come from. On their own neither number tells you much; the gap between them tells you a lot.

A quick rule many link builders use is the trust ratio, TF divided by CF. Around 0.5 or higher looks natural; well under that is a reason to open the site and look at its links before you go further.

Why Root, www and https Give Different Scores

Majestic calculates Flow Metrics for each URL, each subdomain and each root domain separately. A link to http://www.example.com counts toward that exact URL, toward the www subdomain and toward the root, but not toward https://example.com. So a site that switched to HTTPS years ago can show TF 30 on its root domain and TF 12 on its https homepage, because most of its older links still point at the http address.

You don't have to choose. Auto-detect, the default, gives a plain domain its whole-site score, which is what most marketplaces and sellers quote, and checks any full URL you paste exactly as written. Pick one of the protocol buttons when you care about the exact address a link will point to.

What Is a Good Trust Flow Score?

TF runs lower than most authority scores, so don't compare it with DA or DR directly: a site at DR 45 often sits around TF 20. The useful comparison is with the sites ranking in your niche. As a rough guide for root domains:

Many link builders set a floor of TF 10 to 15 for guest posts and raise it for competitive niches. A site above your floor still needs the right topic, which is where Topical Trust Flow comes in.

Topical Trust Flow: Where the Trust Comes From

Majestic sorts its trusted seed sites into hundreds of topic categories, such as Health/Medicine, Business or Recreation/Pets, and reports how much of a site's Trust Flow comes from each. That breakdown is Topical Trust Flow, and the checker lists a domain's top topics with their scores under Complete details, along with its primary topic.

It's the fastest relevance check there is. A pet blog whose strongest topic is Recreation/Pets earned its trust in its own field. A pet blog whose strongest topic is Gambling or Adult was almost certainly bought, rebuilt or hacked at some point, whatever its overall TF says.

How to Read Your TF Check Results

Each card shows TF, CF, external backlinks, referring domains and IP address. Switch on Complete details for the rest, where the provider returns it. These are the signals we look at first:

• Referring subnets far below referring domains: 300 linking domains on 20 subnets usually means a handful of owners, the fingerprint of a private blog network.
• .edu and .gov links: a few genuine ones explain a high TF. Hundreds of them on a small site usually means spammed student pages or open forums.
• Top anchor texts: brand names and URLs are normal. Casino, pharma or foreign language keywords are not.
• Redirect: a domain that forwards elsewhere passes its links on. Common with expired domains bought to boost another site.
• Referring languages: an English site whose links come mostly in another language bought them somewhere.
• Crawled vs indexed URLs and domain rank: how much of the site Majestic has seen, and where the domain sits in Majestic's own ranking of sites.

DA, PA, TF and CF Together

Plenty of people look for a single DA PA TF CF checker, and for good reason: Moz DA tells you how strong a site is, Majestic TF tells you whether that strength comes from trusted links, and Ahrefs DR gives a third opinion. A site with DA 40 and TF 5 is the classic inflated domain; DA 30 with TF 25 is usually a better link than its DA suggests.

What a Bulk TF Check Is Good For

• Vetting guest post lists: drop every site under your TF floor or with a trust ratio well below 0.5, then judge what's left on topic and traffic.
• Expired domain research: TF, Topical Trust Flow, anchors and the redirect flag together tell you whether a dropped domain had a real history.
• Backlink audits: export the domains linking to your site, paste them here, and the ones with near zero TF and huge CF are the spam you've been sent.
• Checking a seller's claims: TF is quoted in many link marketplaces. Paste the list and see today's numbers, on the exact URL form they quoted.

How to Increase Trust Flow

TF rises when sites close to Majestic's seeds link to you, so the work is earning links from established, editorial sites rather than adding more links of any kind:

1. Get mentioned where trust lives. Industry publications, news coverage, university resources and professional associations sit close to the seeds.
2. Stay on topic. Links from sites in your own field raise the Topical Trust Flow categories that match your business.
3. Point links at the address you use. Since TF is scored per URL form, ask for links to your current https address and keep 301 redirects from the old ones.
4. Skip volume tactics. Directories, comments and networks raise CF, not TF, and widen the gap that makes a profile look bought.

One myth worth clearing up: disavowing links in Google Search Console does nothing to Trust Flow. Majestic never sees your disavow file, and taking links away can only lower your scores, never raise them. TF goes up when you add trusted links.

Why Trust Flow Changes, or Differs Between Tools

Majestic keeps two link indexes: a Fresh Index of links seen recently and a much larger Historic Index going back years. A domain's TF can differ between the two, so a number quoted from another tool isn't necessarily wrong, it may simply come from the other index or another URL form.

Within one index, TF moves when Majestic recrawls: links you gain or lose, and changes in the trust of the sites linking to you. Expect gradual movement over weeks, not overnight jumps. A sudden drop usually means a strong linking page disappeared or changed its links.
