What Ahrefs Domain Rating actually measures

Domain Rating is Ahrefs' score for the strength of a website's backlink profile, on a 0 to 100 scale. It is a measure of links only. Ahrefs looks at how many unique websites link to you with dofollow links, how strong those websites are, and how many other sites each of them links out to. A referring domain that links to thousands of sites passes less to each one than a domain that links to a handful.

Like Moz's Domain Authority, DR is logarithmic. The first 30 points come quickly, and every point after 60 costs disproportionately more. That's why our DR 60 package is $149 while DR 80 is $2,999. Two clarifications save a lot of confusion. DR is not URL Rating, which is the Ahrefs score for a single page. And DR isn't a Google metric. Google doesn't use it. How long does it take to increase DR?

DR is our fastest metric to move. DR 30, 40, 50 and 60 are delivered in 7 to 15 days. DR 70 and DR 75 take 30 to 60 days, and DR 80 takes 60 to 90 days. Campaigns start within 24 hours of payment.

There are two reasons the timeline stretches as the target rises. The first is supply. Domains that are strong enough to move a DR 70 site are limited in number and pickier about who they link to, and each one needs a real conversation. The second is Ahrefs itself. Your DR changes only once its crawler has found and indexed the new links, and then recalculated. That usually happens faster than with Moz, but it isn't instant, and we can't force it.

So if a provider tells you DR 70 arrives in three days, ask how. In my experience the only way to do that is with links that Ahrefs later discounts, and your number will fall back.

Why every DR package has a 10 month refill warranty

Domain Rating isn't frozen once it goes up. Ahrefs recalculates it continuously as it finds new links and loses old ones. Pages get deleted, sites shut down, and every other site's score shifts around yours. That is normal, and no honest provider can promise that a DR number will never move.

What really moves DR (and what does not)

Ahrefs has been open about the general shape of the calculation, and it lines up with what I see in practice. The number of unique referring domains counts for far more than the number of links. Only dofollow links pass DR, so a wall of nofollow links from forums and comments does little. And a link from a strong website that links to few others is worth more than one from a strong website that links to everyone.

Anchor text and page-level details don't move Domain Rating the way they influence rankings. DR is a domain-level, link-count-and-quality measure. If you want to grow it yourself, the reliable path is earning links from many different relevant sites, which is slow. Cheap tricks backfire. Sitewide links inflate backlink counts and don't help much. Mass directory submissions and spun articles can lift a number briefly, then get discounted.
